RESUMO

Abstract The impact of fish oil concentration on the oxidative stability of microcapsules through the spray drying process using chitosan and maltodextrin as wall material was studied. Emulsions were prepared with different Tuna fish oil (TFO) content (TFO-10%, TFO20%, TF030% TF0-40%) while wall material concentration was kept constant. Microencapsulated powder resulting from emulsion prepared with high fish oil load have high moisture content, wettability, total oil and low encapsulation efficiency, hygroscopicity and bulk tapped density. Oxidative stability was evaluated periodically by placing microcapsules at room temperature. Microcapsules prepared with TFO-10% presented high oxidative stability in terms of peroxide value (2.94±0.04) and anisidine value (1.54±0.02) after 30 days of storage. It was concluded that optimal amounts of fish oil for microencapsulation are 10% and 20% using chitosan and maltodextrin that extended its shelf life during study period.

Abstract Reports abound on Lernaea parasitizing the brood stock, fingerlings, and marketable-sized culturable freshwater fish species in various parts of the world. We investigated seven small-scale aquaculture farms and how the prevailing Lernaea is impacting them. Randomly seven fish farms were selected to determine the prevalence percentage of lernaeid ectoparasites. Relevant information of the fishponds to estimate the various aspects such as effects of water source and quality, feed, stocking density, treatment used, and weight and length of fish, concerned with Lernaea infestation and prevalence was gathered. The results indicated that Catla catla (F. Hamilton, 1822) showed highest prevalence (41.7%) among the seven fish species, whereas Oreochromis niloticus showed zero. Other five fish species Ctenopharyngodon idella, Cirrhinus cirrhosis, Cyprinus carpio, Labeo rohita and Hypophthalmichthys molitrix showed 13.2%, 8.1%, 7.7%, 7.4%, 0.9% prevalence, respectively. In Royal Fish Farm 84.3% lernaeid infestation was observed, while no parasite was observed in the Vicents Chunnian fish farm. The water source, quality, feed, fertilizers, stocking density, water temperature, and potential treatment options displayed varying tendencies among fish farms and prevalence. Depending on the weight and length, the highest prevalence (56.7%, and 66.7%) was observed in 3501-4000 g and 81-90 cm groups. The infestation rate varied in various fish body parts with the dorsal fin the most vulnerable organ and showed 2.3% overall prevalence (while 18.4% contribution within total 12.6% infestation). Out of 147 infected fish samples, 45 were extensively contaminated by Lernaea spread. In conclusion, our findings confirm that Lernaea could pose a considerable threat to marketable fish, and various treatment options should be educated to the farmers to help mitigate the spread and potential losses. Furthermore, Catla catla is more vulnerable to Lernaea infestation (41.7%), so are the fish species being cultured at higher stocking densities.

Aeromonas hydrophila is a cause of infectious disease outbreaks in carp species cultured in South Asian countries including Pakistan. This bacterium has gained resistance to a wide range of antibiotics and robust preventive measures are necessary to control its spread. No prior use of fish vaccines has been reported in Pakistan. The present study aims to develop and evaluate inactivated vaccines against local strain of A. hydrophila in Pakistan with alum-precipitate as adjuvant. The immunogenic potential of vaccine was evaluated in two Indian major carps (Rohu: Labeo rohita, Mori: Cirrhinus mrigala) and a Chinese carp (Grass carp: Ctenopharyngodon idella). Fish were vaccinated intraperitoneally followed by a challenge through immersion. Fish with an average age of 4-5 months were randomly distributed in three vaccinated groups with three vaccine concentrations of 108, 109 and 1010 colony forming unit (CFU)/ml and a control group. Fixed dose of 0.1ml was applied to each fish on 1st day and a booster dose at 15 days post-vaccination (DPV). Blood samples were collected on 14, 28, 35, 48 and 60 DPV to determine antibody titers in blood serum using compliment fixation test (CFT). Fish were challenged at 60 DPV with infectious A. hydrophila with 108 CFU/ml through immersion. Significantly higher levels of antibody titers were observed from 28 DPV in all vaccinated groups as compared to those in the control group. In challenge experiment the average RPS (relative percent survivability) was 71% for groups vaccinated with 109 and 1010 CFU/ml and 86% for 108 CFU/ml. Vaccine with 108 CFU/ml induced highest immune response followed by 109 and 1010 CFU/ml. The immune response of L. rohita and C. idella was better than that of C. mrigala. RESUMO

Objective: Some months after the remission of acute COVID-19, some individuals show depressive symptoms, which are predicted by increased peak body temperature (PBT) and decreased blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). The present study aimed to examine data on whether long COVID is associated with increased insulin resistance (IR) in association with neuroimmune and oxidative (NIO) processes during the acute infectious and long COVID phases. Methods: This case-control, retrospective cohort study used the Homeostasis Model Assessment 2 (HOMA2) calculator© to compute β-cell function (HOMA2%B) and insulin sensitivity (HOMA2%S) and resistance (HOMA2-IR) and administered the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) to 86 patients with long COVID and 39 controls. Results: Long COVID (3-4 months after the acute infection) is accompanied by increased HOMA2-IR, fasting blood glucose (FBG), and insulin levels; 33.7% of the patients vs. 0% of the controls had HOMA2-IR values > 1.8, suggesting IR. Increased IR was predicted by PBT during acute infection and associated with depressive symptoms above and beyond the effects of NIO pathways (nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich repeat, and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 [NLRP3] inflammasome, myeloperoxidase [MPO], protein oxidation). There were no significant associations between increased IR and the activated NIO pathways during long COVID. Conclusion: Long COVID is associated with new-onset IR, which may contribute to onset of depressive symptoms due to long COVID by enhancing overall neurotoxicity.

RESUMO

Objectives: A previous study has shown that schizophrenia (SCZ) is accompanied by lowered levels of trace/metal elements, including cesium. However, it is not clear whether changes in cesium, rubidium, and rhenium are associated with activated immune-inflammatory pathways, cognitive impairments, and the symptomatology of SCZ. Methods: This study measured cesium, rubidium, and rhenium, cognitive impairments (using the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia [BACS]), and the levels of cytokines/chemokines interleukin (IL)-1β, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and eotaxin (CCL11) in 120 patients with SCZ and 54 healthy controls. Severity of illness was assessed using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS), the Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Rating (FF) Scale, and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D). Results: Serum cesium was significantly lower in patients with SCZ as compared with controls. Further, serum cesium was significantly and inversely associated with CCL11 and TNF-α, but not IL-1β, in patients with SCZ; significant inverse associations were also noted between serum cesium levels and BPRS, FF, HAM-D, and SANS scores. Finally, cesium was positively correlated with neurocognitive probe results including the Tower of London, Symbol Coding, Controlled Word Association, Category Instances, Digit Sequencing Task, and List Learning tests. Conclusion: The results suggest that lowered serum cesium levels may play a role in the pathophysiology of SCZ, contributing to specific symptom domains including negative, depressive and fatigue symptoms, neurocognitive impairments (spatial working, episodic, and semantic memory and executive functions), and neuroimmune pathways.

RESUMO

Autogenous bone grafts are commonly used for the reconstruction of bone defects in surgical procedures. The complication of preparing bone grafts and their application are important factors that have encouraged investigators to use human bone matrix gelatin human [BMG] which is one of the most popular graft materials. Because of the worldwide need for reconstruction of bone defects and its difficulty the aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of BMG and auto graft on the reconstruction of bone defects in parietal bone of rats. In this experimental study, data was collected through microscopic observations. Human BMG produced using human Humorous bone based on Urist technical method. 12 healthy male Sprague dawley rats randomly assigned into 4 groups [3 rats in each group] and sacrificed in 7, 14, 24 and 60[th] days after surgery. Two defects were made in the left and right sides of parietal bone of all rats. Human BMG placed randomly in one side and auto graft in the other side and then all specimens in each group were assessed and compared histologically to each other. Assessments included amount, rate and type of bone formation, inflammation signs, fibrous tissue and cartilage formation to analyze the histologic findings, Wilcoxon-single rank test was used. The results showed a reduction of inflammation and also increase in new bone formation in both groups during 7, 14, 24 and 60th day after surgery. Bone formation percentage in human BMG cases in 24th day was more than autograft. There was no significant difference between two groups in 60th day. The findings suggested that although human BMG has the same effects as autograft, the rate of reconstruction with human BMG is more

RESUMO

Nigella sativa has an antibacterial effect; it produced also a marked antifungal, anticestodal and antinematodal activity besides its antiarithritic, analgesic, antiseptic, antiviral and too many other activities. To show the effect of Nigella sativa fixed oil on the healing rate of RAU. Forty patients with RAU having no other systemic manifestations were included in this study. Those patients were divided into two groups of 20 patients each. The first group was treated by Nigella sativa fixed oil 10% in glycerin 3 times daily, the second group was treated with glycerin 3 times daily. All those patients were assessed by Oral Clinical Manifestation Index [OCMI]. Patients treated with Nigella sativa showed 100% cure after five days of treatment. Nigella sativa fixed oil is a new effective topical agent for promotion of healing of recurrent oral ulceration

RESUMO

The study was conduced to evaluate the effect of storage of amalgam restorations [from 1 week up to 1 year] lined by different types of varnish. Sixty freshly extracted human teeth were selected and stored in normal saline. Black's class V cavity preparations were made in the middle third of both lingual and buccal surfaces of each tooth. The teeth were randomly divided into three groups of twenty teeth each [40 restorations]: Group I with no liner, Group II with Copal varnish and Group III with Silver varnish [Amalgam Liner, VOCO Germany]. The teeth were restored with a high copper dental amalgam, then the restored teeth were aged in normal physiological saline at 37 C. each group was further divided into 4 subgroups according to the time of aging [1 week, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year]. The teeth in subgroup A of each group were aged for one week, for subgroup B the teeth were aged for 3 months, subgroup C for 6 months and finally subgroup D for one year. The teeth were then thermocycled, longitudinally sectioned and dye penetration was recorded by a steriomicroscope. Microleakage, in general, significantly decreased with aging between the one- week and the one-year intervals for all groups. The silver varnish groups demonstrated significantly less microleakage when compared with the copal varnish and no varnish groups at the one-week groups. This decrease in dye penetration was insignificant in the 3 month, 6 month and one year group

RESUMO

This work was carried out on 34 cases with urethrocutaneous fistulae post-hypospadias repair in the Reconstructive Surgery Unit of Al-Zahraa University Hospital. Reconstruction of urethro-cutaneous fistulae was achieved by two procedures. The first MAGPI procedure was applied for cases having coronal or subcoronal fistulae [10 cases] post hypospadias repair. All the fistulae in this group healed completely giving 100% success. The second Y-V flap procedure was applied for cases having subcoronal, shaft [distal, mid and proximal] and the penoscrotal fistulae. Perfect work emphasized the satisfactory results of the two procedures in reconstruction of the urethro-cutaneous fistulae post-hypospadias repair. These procedures are simple, one stage and successful with a low morbidity and a short period of hospitalization

RESUMO

Incisional hernia is mostly iatrogenic, with the development of modern surgical techniques, more operative procedures are done for a greater number of elderly patients, consequently the incidence of incisional hernia is increased in older ages. This study included thirty cases suffering from recurrent incisional hernia, who were admitted to Al-Zahraa Hospital, El-Azhar University, during the period from January 1987 to June 1989, nineteen cases were females and eleven cases were males, their ages range from 31-63 years with an average of 45 years. The work included, a clinical study, pre-operative preparation, operative technique, post operative care and follow up. Our modified technique was used which brought very strong layers which covered the hernial defect without distortion to the anatomical layers. The results of this technique showed no recurrence or any other complications and has proved their suitability in dealing with such defects. Lastly, we can conclude that this new, simple and effective technique needs further applications on a wider scale and longer follow up in order to assess properly its accurate value in management of recurrent incisional hernia
